Š: Let's say I believe you about that one.
So, you ran across the runway at Sarajevo Airport to go to BjelaŠnica; right?
W: Right.
Š: Now, Sarajevo Airport was under the control of the United Nations at the time; right?
W: Right.
Š: You haven't been able to run across the runway without being seen by the UN observers; right?
W: You would run across the runway between midnight and 4.00 or 5.00 a.m.,
in the period when there was the least UNPROFOR frequency there.
Š: That's because you were afraid of the Serb snipers or artillery fire; that's why you
had to run across the runway after midnight. However, the UN forces had the IC devices
for night observation, they had night-sights, UNPROFOR; right?
W: I don't know that.
Š: You couldn't have run across the Sarajevo runway without UN forces giving
you permission to do that; is that right?
W: No, it's not.
Š: When you were digging the tunnel underneath the airport, do you mean to say
that the UN forces did not know that you were digging it?
W: I learned about the tunnel only sometime in October 1993, perhaps, even November.
Š: It really doesn't matter when you learned about the tunnel. In Oct. and Dec. 1993
you were in captivity. Maybe you found out while you were in captivity. So the Serbs
also knew about the tunnel. Do you agree with me that it's impossible for the tunnel
to have been dug under the Sarajevo airfield without the UN forces knowing anything about it?
W: It's absolutely possible.
Š: How is it possible?
W: If you shut a mouse, he will find a way out.
Š: I agree you acted as mice as you were digging a hole, but that hole could not
have been dug without the UN forces knowing, if the Serb forces knew and if they were
trying to impede the digging of the tunnel by targeting its beginning and its end
with artillery, is that correct?
W: We did run across, that's true. I don't know if you had occasion -- if you allow me,
Your Honour, to ask a counter-question.
Š: No, you cannot. You will have to only answer.
ANTONETTI: No, no, you cannot ask questions, you are being asked questions. If you know,
answer the question, if you don't know, then don't do it. But please answer.
He is entitled to ask you any question he likes.
W: I will repeat. The tunnel was dug up without knowledge of UNPROFOR.
Š: From that we could draw the conclusion that all the soldiers of the UNPROFOR
were cretins. If they were guarding the airport and the runway, while somebody
was digging a tunnel underneath, and the Muslim forces were going through the tunnel
safely, transporting ammunition, weaponry and all the supplies.
What kind of cretins did they mobilise into their forces? The only possible
conclusion is that the forces of the UNPROFOR knew about the tunnel and they
allowed it to be dug. Right?
W: That's not true.
Š: Then, what is true?
W: You draw conclusions, I say it's not true.
Š: You graduated from the School of Political Science at the university where I used to be a professor. Right?
W: Assistant!
Š: You're not well informed. I was also a professor later.
HARHOFF: Can I just ask you, is it your position that the UN would have been
under an obligation to prevent the digging of the tunnel?
Š: UN troops were obligated to position themselves neutrally between the warring parties.
They were securing the airport so that humanitarian aid could arrive, and they
were duty-bound to prevent any airport misuse for war purposes.
Instead, they made it possible for Muslim forces to dig up the tunnel.
I want to compromise the UN, because their forces provided combat cooperation
to Muslim forces against Serb forces, and I have done this successfully.
I have compromised UN, because I am their enemy.
