They are street children who are living a very terrible life out there.
They don't go to schools.
My name is Hasani from Tanzania.
I'm an alumni of the Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES)
In my country, in Tanzania, the problem of orphans is overwhelming.
50,000 orphans in Dar Es Salaam.
Those few orphans who get the chance to stay in an orphanage, they are the ones going to school.
But those in the street, they are sometimes used as house girls.
Boys are used as cheap labor. Sometimes they are not even paid.
So they are living a terrible life out there.
When I was in high school I participated in a foreign exchange student program in the U.S.A.
I saw how people in America were helping out, so I was very interested in teaching.
They are very poor, studying in very poor public schools.
They don't have enough competent teachers. They need help in math and science.
I'm working on a community project helping orphans in a center in Dar Es Salaam.
The students I teach are high school students, grades nine to twelve.
I help these orphans. I go there and teach them on weekends.
I teach them math and sciences.
A big part of this is that I feel responsible for some of the social problems.
This project that YES has started, I hope that in the next five years, I will touch the life of many orphans.
