Tutor: So, i'd like you to write 40 plus 90 because that sum will represent our total. what's 40 plus 90?
Kayla: One hundred and thirty.
Tutor: Now, how could we make these numbers easier to work with? what's at the end of all 3 numbers that we could get rid of?
Kayla: Zero?
Tutor: Great. So now we have four plus nine equals thirteen.
Tutor: These 13 parts will be our whole. And what does that mean?
Kayla: The whole two liter bottle.
Tutor: Which is how many ounces?
Kayla: Sixty-five.
Tutor: so how could we show our 13 parts on our bottle?
Kayla: We could mark it off like a graduated cylinder.
Tutor: So each part would be equal to how many ounces do you think?
Kayla: Well, couldn't we just divide 65 by 13? That would produce 5 ounce increments.
Tutor: Great, that's right! now, let's think about how our two ingredients will relate to each other because this is really the heart of what proportions are about.
Tutor: You were pretty impressive with your multiplication skills and i want you to use those skills for this last part of the problem.
Tutor: What should we mulitply to figure out how much oil to add?
Kayla: Well, since we know there are 9 parts oil we can multiply that number by our 5 ounces and get 45 ounces.
Tutor: Correct again kayla! and now what can we say about how much vinegar we'll be adding?
Kayla: That’s easy. We’ll multiply our 4 parts by 5 ounces to leave us with 20 ounces. Makes a fine dressing.
