Hello my name’s James, and I do subjects specialism English
on this teaching course at Kingston University
it’s a BA in Education, Primary Education with QTS
Qualified Teacher Status. Where we’re actually filming
at the moment is the Education building, where we spend
a lot of our times and we have a lot of our lectures.
I don’t know if you can see in the backgrounds
there’s various mock ups, of sort of works
that you find in schools
which aid us tremendously, because we spend
a lot of the time in uni. We only spend roughly
two or three months in schools. At terms speaking,
the qualification you need to do this QTS course
at Kingston University, are C grade and above in GCSE;
Maths, English and Science. And then for your
subject specialism, whether that’s Science, English,
Geography or History, you will need A-Level C grade or
preferably higher or equivalent BTEC.
There’s lots of support at Kingston Hill, especially on this campus
where we do our QTS teaching course, there are
support staff on hand to help you, read through your assignments
in addition the teaching staff are on hand pretty much
all the time, we have their e-mail addresses, contact phone numbers
and if there’s a problem whatever, shape or form
it’s so easy to get hold of the lecturers and the people who
are in charge of, enabling you to get those grades.
With English Specialism, not to be confused with an English degree
we find ourselves quite often looking at the work we
would give our children, in our classroom to do. We also vet
our work to make sure that what we are giving the children
is possibly the best that we can give them, in order
to get the best out of them. So in clarification
an English Specialism is not an English degree, in fact
you are only doing what’s necessary for you to take
on a literacy coordinator role or senior management in
a school position. So it’s not an English degree, it’s just
preparing you to sort of almost specialise when you
get to school level in your chosen topic.
Hi there my name’s Sebastian and I’m on my
second year of a 3 year degree for Primary Teaching
at Kingston University. We obviously study all the
curriculum subjects, so your Art, Maths, English, Science,
Drama, all those sort of things. and I specialise
in geography and History. this means that I just
have a little bit extra time to study Geography and History
and how I teach that in a classroom, so for example;
at the moment I’m writing an assignment
about 20th century history and how I’d use a living source
in a classroom, so for a year 3 class, maybe bring in
a grandparent who lived during the war and using some
hot-sitting techniques, talking to them, asking them
questions, all things like that for History.
With my specialism, we go on lots of different trips,
which is absolutely fantastic, we’ve been to Amsterdam
and Scarborough and even just into the centre of London
that’s with Geography. and also on History we’ve been to
many of the museums in London as well.
We learn how we’d use trips and museums for children
in the classroom and taking them outside of school.
When we go into schools, we are placed with a class and
for my placement, I've just finished, I was taking over
about 60- 80% of the teaching time, so doing everything from
taking the register to actually taking lessons, which’s what
I really enjoyed and that really proved that teaching is
what I want to go into. I also was able to help design parts
of the classroom, such as the role-play corner and displays
and it was just a really good experience and
I really enjoyed it, even the extracurricular thing, such as
country dancing and playing guitar in assembly.
I was able to bring all those of sort of things into
my placement and it was really fantastic. So any skills
which you do have, if you are interested in becoming a teacher
is really good to home those skills and bring them to the classroom
because children love hearing things and seeing things
and it is really good.
The course is assessed through assignments, and
I spoke about my history assignment, which I’ve just been doing
but we’ve had lots of different ones, and one that just
comes to mind is, talk in the, using talk in mathematics
because a lot of children don’t actually talk through
their answers and maths is, its historically seen as
something you see in your head when you work it out
with a piece of paper. But what we’ve been looking at
is how talking in a group of children can actually start
to think about how we can solve problems and so
that’s an assignment. I’ve been looking at
different theories and research, and also my
own experience from being on placement, so it’s really good
to draw on your experiences from being in schools and
putting them into your assignments as well
so that’s a bit of a tip.
Teaching is not something which I have thought about
ever since I was a child, I know a lot of my friends
have been set on teaching, that’s what I wanna do
but it’s something which a couple of people have
suggested to me and I never really thought about it.
And when I actually did some research and looked into it
I thought actually this looks like it could be quite fun
So I did some volunteer work in some schools and found out
yeah, it’s good working in a school, it’s a good fun, and every day
is different and it’s always a good laugh
And so when I actually came to University and took on
the role of a teacher in the classroom, that really proved
to me that teaching is what I want to go into
and something which I really, I’m enjoying and hopefully
will enjoy for the rest of my life. very cheesy.
