- We're here!
- (Finebros) Why do you think she's gotten to be so popular?
- Honestly, I don't see why she's so great.
- I can't go from gangster rap to Melanie Martinez.
- 'Cause of the diversity of her music videos.
They're so strange and so weird, and people get attracted to those things.
- Her voice itself is just not something that people hear every day.
- I saw people at her concert from different age groups,
from different-- I saw boys, girls, and you could see different people
coming together because the lyrics help everybody so much.
- (Finebros) So Melanie got her start as a contestant on the show, The Voice.
- Oh. Really?
- Usually when I think of shows like that,
I think of just complete pop.
I don't see her as that type of person.
- With those type of singing shows i just kind of imagine
factory built pop stars!
- It's kind of strange just because when you watch shows
like The Voice and American Idol and X Factor,
you never really see the losing contestants get a career afterwards,
but her career has just completely skyrocketed.
- (Finebros) Her first album is a concept album
that follows the story of a character she created,
inspired her childhood nickname "Cry baby".
- Ooh! See? Mind blown.
- (Finebros) What do you think about this as a concept for an album?
- I mean, Marshall Mather, Slim Shady-- that's all I gotta say.
- It's cool because your stories are a lot better
than just singing about money and stuff.
- It's really cool that she actually decides to do that.
It shows that she's really true to herself,
that she stuck to what she thought as a little kid.
- For her to bring that back and even accept it
and put it out there, it's like, "Yeah, they call me a cry baby,
but look at me now. I just have to shrug it off like..."
- (Finebros) Her character comes from her being so sensitive
and emotional and dealing with anxiety and fear as a teenager.
As a teen yourself, is that something you relate to?
- Well, yeah, I think everyone can relate to it.
Everyone goes through feelings of anxiety and stress.
- We have the stress level of 40 year old people at our age
because of the amount of academic stress that is put upon us.
Having a social life and then wanting to feel like you're accepted,
or you fit in, because that's really important in high school.
- You have so much pressure on you, and I can see it's okay being sensitive,
and it's okay to cry because everyone feels it,
which is why her music is so popular.
- (Finebros) She is known for being very hands-on
on all aspects of her career.
She writes her own music, she designs the album art,
and even directs some of her videos. - I just think it's crazy.
- I applaud her for that because a lot of artists
just have people they hire and do it for them.
- She has a vision.
She has a message she wants to give to the world if she's doing all this.
- I admire when people take the initiative to do something themselves
and they don't let anybody else touch their art.
- Even when you watch the behind-the-scenes of her music videos,
you see her behind the camera and very much directing it
and showing things, how she wants it.
She has this exact vision in her mind.
