Hello I am Leslie Stockard I am the owner of the Classic Cookie and Café and we call
ourselves the Cheers without beer in the Waldo area of Kansas City. This is where I live,
this is my most wonderful thing and we have so many repeat customers so I want them to
feel that they are coming into my kitchen in my home. I have had the restaurant for
fifteen years; I am a graduate of the culinary program out at Johnson County. I catered out
of my home for many years until I decided I needed some professional training. I didn't
really think they could teach me anything about cooking and boy did they open my eyes
because I felt like a fish out of water when I got there. I learned about the hospitality
side of my job and I learned how to do purchasing, how to keep my books and just pretty much
general business skills. Is has a reputation as a great school, it also fit my work schedule
and it was affordable. That was the main thing really and I had also heard about the program
through other friends. I have wonderful memories of being out there. I had met one or two people
that are still very dear friends of mine. One of the most fun things we did was we went
to Las Vegas as a class and got to tour the kitchens of the MGM Grande which was pretty
phenomenal. I walked in here and the previous owner handed me the keys and walked out the
door. I had never worked here a day in my life, it was sink or swim and thankfully I
was able to swim. Personally I learned patience. I learned not be afraid to try new things.
I learned to just enjoy your time and to work hard and you can get where ever you want to
go with this kind of a background.
