HOST: If you’re one of the millions of Americans
with constipation, it probably has a lot to do with what you eat.
A diet low in fiber and high in fats from, say, meats and cheese, could be what’s binding
you up. And, that’s actually good news, since your diet is something you can control.
So, if you’re feeling constipated, make fiber a friend.
Women should eat 25 grams per day, and men should try for 38 grams a day.
Fruits and veggies like apples, peaches, oranges, broccoli, and carrots are a great start. You
can also add more fiber to your diet with beans, bread and cereal. Kidney beans, black-eyed
peas and 7-grain breads or bran cereals are all good sources.
Remember, most bouts of constipation are temporary. But, if your constipation is lasting longer
than three weeks, call your doctor.
