There's a lady in the town who talks about everyone
She talks about what they say and all the things they've done
She tears them down to size, this was her trade
Listening to Sophie was a gossip hit parade
When she'd come to the synagogue they'd all gather 'round
To hear the latest, hottest gossip in the town
She knew it all and she told it like a pro
She'd take deep, deep breath and off she'd go
"Did you hear the other day what about you he did say
And I know you wouldn't believe the fight that Debbie had with Steve
And that lady's such a hog, she's always dressed in rags
And the joke of the week is to hear the Rabbi speak"
No one was spared her scathing tongue
Be you rich or poor, be you old or young
Juicy stories were her specialty, gossip her desert
She never seemed to realize that someone may be hurt
Well one day it did happen in the supermarket aisle
She saw some ladies talking, laughing with big smiles
But as she approached them it was clear to see
"Oh my gosh" she said, "they're talking about me"
"Did you hear the other day what about me she did say
That lady with her tongue I tell you should be hung
Yes I hate the way she talks and I hate the way she walks
I hate the way she stares and the ugly clothes she wears
There's a lady in town who's reached pride and fame
She never says an unkind word and Sophie is her name
When you're around her watch what you say
Mention someone's name and Sophie runs away
Did you see the other day how a word she wouldn't say
I tell you she's the best, that lady should be blessed
She's one of a kind, folks like her are hard to find
Yes Sophie is her name, yes Sophie is her name
