Hi, my name is Carol Holmquist, Director of Advocacy at the MSPCA.
I had always loved animals, and had animals as a child, and
had started to volunteer at the MSPCA.
I've been there for a while, um because it's really a unique
organization and um, it
makes a lot of great progress for animals.
They do a lot of things at my job, we're
non-profits so everyone does a lot of different things. My primary focus is to
work to better protect
animals, through stronger
legislation and regulation.
We're continually passing stronger
animal protection legislation that will prevent
cruelty and better protect all types of animals in the state.
The typical day really depends on what time of year it is and what... what year of
the session it is. Um,
there are times when there's a lot of hearings going on and we're up at the
statehouse a lot trying to work
to build support for legislation, and
trying to really identify those
issues that we think are going to, um...
help the most animals and protect animals that are really suffering the most.
We also play some defense. We try to prevent harmful legislation from passing.
In, um, 1996 there was a valid question in Massachusetts that
restricted certain types of body gripping traps for...
for burying animals,
and ever since then, really, there have been attempts in the legislature to repeal
part or all of that.
So, unfortunately, it's an ongoing
issue,
um, that we've worked on for many years trying to protect the integrity of that valid
question.
There's still a lot of
areas where we could do a lot better in Massachusetts.
