a lot of Michigan is very unexplored in the wintertime
its really encouraged to go out and check out your own trail, blaze your own area and
check out different places
you won't get lost cause you can always follow your tracks back
these snowshoes are the Michigan style snowshoe, or Huron style
I didn't bend the frames myself but I did do all of the lacing myself
the wooden snowshoes also look pretty in the summertime when you want to hang them up on
your wall
my name is Teresa Neil and I'm the park naturalist here at Tahquamenon Falls State Park
and I really like taking people out to explore some new trails, trails we don't hike very
often
in my position my goal is to try to connect people with nature, not just when they come
to
check out the falls but a little bit deeper
you can hear the bird chirping, you can hear the birds just flitting around because its
so nice and quiet
theres some fox, some mink and pine marten tracks and when you're snowmobiling you don't
always get to see all those things
and you feel very at peace, its a great place to calm down and unwind
you get to experience the area on a different level
especially in the wintertime when its quiet and you're by yourself
so by taking people and having them explore areas that aren't usually well traveled
and you become more connected to the place because you got to see an area that other
people don't usually get to see
if you really want some more challenging hills and terrain you can do the western upper peninsula
over by
the porcupine mountains has some great hills, and also northwestern lower peninsula as well
has some really good terrain
from a lot of public land to how much snow we get here in Michigan and the lake effect
snow and the various terrain makes
it a great place to snowshoe
coming out into the woods and not hearing anything else, not even a truck or an airplane
or snowmobile
its really nice, its a great time of year to get out and explore
