Hi, my name is Annalisa Berardi.
I'm a graduate dietetics student at Eastern Illinois, and today
I'll be talking to you about the importance of breakfast.
Everybody knows that breakfast is the most
important meal of the day.
However, it's the most often skipped meal,
especially in college students.
The most important reason why we need breakfast is because
it provides the nutrients necessary to fuel our body,
brain, and muscles to function throughout the day.
Most Americans skip breakfast because they say they don't
have time, they use excuses, or some might even think that
it may cause them to gain weight.
According to the American Dietetic Association, people
who eat a healthy breakfast every morning are more likely
to lose weight or control and maintain their healthy weight
compared to those who don't eat breakfast everyday.
Eating breakfast will help satisfy your hunger and
help you feel full longer and avoid high calorie snack
foods and help you prevent overeating during lunch time.
It is critical for children to eat breakfast
for growth and development.
Parents need to set good examples and provide breakfast
every morning for their children so that they get
the nutrients necessary for growth and development.
Research indicates that children who eat breakfast every morning
do better in school and are less likely to be overweight.
One study indicated that children who eat breakfast
every morning had met their protein requirements and had
higher intakes of calcium, iron, and fiber.
So when planning a healthy breakfast, you should aim for
whole grains, fruit, healthy fruit options, lean proteins,
and low-fat dairy products.
Some whole grain options include cereal, oatmeal,
100% whole wheat bread.
Some fruit options include 100% fruit juices or frozen,
canned, or dried fruits.
Some protein sources include eggs, and also dairy is an
excellent source of protein such as milk, yogurt, or even
cream cheese with a bagel.
So here are some quick and easy breakfast ideas so if time
is an issue, I brought a bag of dried fruit and nuts.
So you could put a good handful in this Ziplock bag so that
you could carry it on the go to work or school.
Peanut butter is an excellent source of protein, so you could
have it in the morning with some toast, 100% whole wheat bread.
I also have some fruit-and-nut granola bars which are also
a good source of fruit and nuts, protein.
I have yogurt, individual sliced peach containers
so that you could take on the go, and of course, oatmeal
is also an excellent source.
Here are some examples of some fruits that you could
just grab and go.
Having breakfast every morning is a major step to improving
your health and lifestyle.
So next time you wake up in the morning and you think
to yourself you don't have time for breakfast, I hope
I provided you today with some examples of ways to incorporate
breakfast and easy ways to include it in your everyday.
