[Stefany Strong] Household generated sharps
include hypodermic needles
syringes and lancets.
They are typically used in the home
for insulin injection or
for administering medications
to treat other chronic diseases
such as allergies, arthritis, osteoporosis,
multiple sclerosis, hepatitis B and ***.
Do you know how to properly
dispose of your sharps?
Do not dispose of sharps
by flushing them down toilets.
Do not place them in cans.
Do not place them in milk jugs.
That's not environmentally safe.
[Dawn Hewitt] Hi Ron, don't you know about
the health department's
Community Used Sharps Disposal Program?
[Ron Freeman] No I don't.
[Dawn Hewitt] Well, I'm on the way to the health department now
to turn my container in
why don't you come along
and I'll show you how the program works.
[Ron Freeman] - Okay! [Dawn Hewitt] - It's easy!
[Music Playing]
[Dawn Hewitt] - Hi Monae, [Monae Boyd] - Hi!
[Dawn Hewitt] I'm here to turn in my sharps container
[Monae Boyd] - Okay
[Dawn Hewitt] and this is my friend Ron.
Can you explain how the program works?
[Monae Boyd] - Sure, Hi Ron. [Ron Freeman] - Hi Monae
[Monae Boyd] Our programs works when your sharps
container is full
we are a drop-off location.
It costs nothing to drop them off,
we will dispose of them.
You can buy another container from us
if you'd like, you don't have to purchase
them from us, but we do have them
for sale for a nominal fee.
I have two sizes,
a small and ones that's a little bit larger.
The thing that's pretty unique
about these containers
is that you put the syringe in
the bigger hole
then slide the needle over to the smallest point
give it a good crack and
the needle will fall in
the container and the syringe can
then be thrown in the garbage.
[Stefany Strong] Managing and disposing of household
generated sharps safely
reduces pollution to the environment
and prevents injury and disease transmission
from needle sticks.
Never leave needles or syringes
in streets, in parks or anywhere else
where they could injure someone.
[Ron Freeman] I think this one would fit my needs
[Monae Boyd] Okay, sounds great.
[Ron Freeman] You've been more than helpful.
[Monae Boyd] Oh thank you so much,
have a nice day.
[Dawn Hewitt] Wasn't that easy?
[Ron Freeman] Yes it was.
[Stefany Strong] If you do not have a
Community Used Sharps Disposal Program
in your area
all sharps should be disposed of
in rigid puncture resistant
containers such as liquid detergent bottles,
bleach bottles or metal containers.
