(Parent): I asked to meet with about Jane because I noticed
she seems very unhappy at home and she is spending
several hours a night on her homework. She seems frustrated
and upset all of the time. When I ask her what's happening
at school, she doesn't want to talk about it ever.
I wondered if she has special needs.
(Techer): Yes, I noticed when I observe her in class that she
seems lost and doesn't seem to be paying attention.
It's only the beginning of the school year and I'm a
new teacher. So I'm not sure this is normal appropriate
behavior at this time.
(Parent): Well, she is only 8 years old and has always
been an active child who seems to have ants
in her pants but now it seems like she's
in over her head, and I don't know why.
(Admin): Well why don't we take some measures
measures in school to see if they help,
and if not we can always come back
for another brainstorming session for some ideas.
(Parent): Okay, like what?
(Admin): First, we can place her in the front of the
classroom and her teacher can give her promts
to keep her on task. We can pair her with a
study buddy-a friend or someone in the classroom
to help her stay focused.
We could her put her on a 504 plan that will give
her special accomodations. For example, the teacher could
cut back on her homework as an accomodation.
(Parent): Okay, that sounds good.
You are the expert. I really hope this will help.
(Admin): Well, it can't hurt!
