BUILD TOMORROW'S BANK TOGETHER
No doubt that banks and global economy have entered a new era.
Since the beginning of the 2000s, we had three stages.
The first, from 2000 to 2007,
which saw a very strong growth of the global economy
and a development, often frantic,
of the global, international financing system.
From 2007 to 2013,
we had a financial crisis.
Banks have overcome this crisis.
Today, after a tough period,
they are stronger, more solid
under the constraint of rulers, of public opinion and of their clients.
Now, we are in a third stage.
Banks are closer to their clients,
much more attentive to finance the real economy
and to satisfy their clients.
We've gone from a wild period beginning of the 2000s
to a deep financial crisis
and today to a strong interest in the clients' needs
whether they be individuals, companies
or financial establishments.
You said that the banking sector entered a new era.
What are the main challenges for Société Générale?
What makes Société Générale a bit special is first its resilience.
Only a few banks overcame successfully
the main difficulties of the financial crisis.
They are few.
And Société Générale went through many difficulties.
Employees and collaborators at Société Générale
have toughened up.
Everyone agrees to say that Société Générale
is on a developing mode again.
The main challenge for Société Générale
is to show a competitive stand
vis-à-vis its major global rivals.
Some are French.
But they are mainly European or American. Not Asian yet.
So the main challenge for Société Générale is,
as a global bank, present in 80 countries,
to show its difference
and to better serve its clients
whether they be, once again, individuals, companies
or financial institutions.
What do your clients expect in this new context?
Clients expect a lot from their banks,
but they expect in particular that bankers understand their needs
and do not try to sell products
that sometimes do not match their needs.
Our products have to be simple and easy to understand.
And we live in a complicated world, which keeps changing.
A world where we have various risks.
A banker is here to give some advice
to help the client preserve his or her property,
manage risks and undertake projects too.
That's why we need bankers.
That's why we need to train young people to be bankers.
That's a beautiful and exciting job.
To be close to the client, to help him or her to grow, to develop,
that's a beautiful adventure.
