In addition to completing the necessary training, an aspiring court reporter should possess
a number of traits in order to be successful in the field; these characteristics include
an excellent command of spoken and written English, outstanding listening skills and
hearing ability, attention to detail, speed and accuracy in recording spoken discourse,
knowledge of legal and medical terms, and the ability to focus on work for extended
periods of time. As a court reporter, you'll need a high level
of oral comprehension to complete your job. You'll have to be able to recognize and understand
the speech of another person and communicate the information in writing so it is well documented.
You'll also need the ability to organize and plan your work as well as heavy interaction
with computers. The work environment will be in court rooms and offices, typically sitting
at a desk in front of a computer.
