I am at the child development lab, and I am doing
my student teaching. Since I'm early childhood, I'm
preschool-primary, and I have to have a preschool experience and
a primary school experience.
My program is exercise science, and basically we deal with the
functions of the body, the muscles, and the movement, and
the whole department is considered kinesiology.
And we got to do therapy in the clinical center
for the first time. And that was really exciting for
me because it was kind of like I took everything I learned
in class and actually got to make it real.
And actually got to work with a client.
And that was a really neat experience for me.
It started off kind of tough because there are a lot
of things you don't know. Like test scores and test dates,
but I helped start an organization called educate kids
to raise awareness in the college.
I knew how it was to be a freshman and a sophomore and not
know what was going on, and have my advisor spring something
on me, and not have any older people to talk to.
Because when we're student teaching, we don't have
time for anything else.
We were on the vizzy-pitch machine.
It basically analyzes your voice.
So I would say a sound or a word into the microphone and then it
would visually show me the pitch of my voice.
So if you're working with someone who struggles with
pitch you can analyze and it and they can practice.
And having something visual to look at while they're doing it
will help them figure out where in their voice they need to be.
I get to see someone who starts out basically not knowing how
to exercise or not knowing how to eat properly.
And I get to teach them and assist them with exercising
and developing their skills.
The instructors have an open-door policy.
If you have a problem, no matter what it is even if it may not be
your major, you can go to that person and ask them or
for assistance or for help or for guidance.
If I have questions I feel very comfortable asking them; whether
it's in class or you know, outside of class during
office hours, email.
You know, they've always really encouraged us.
All of the professors that I have had' have truly
changed my life. All of the things they teach us
to be as a teacher, they are.
One thing I've noticed about the faculty is they seem to have a
really strong passion for the field.
So it's kind of helped me be more motivated
in what I'm doing. I think it's great that I
had them to show me how to become a teacher.
Because it made me so much better, and I don't know
what I'd be like if I went to another school.
I guess if I were to go back and look at other schools, I
still really feel like I would have chosen SIU.
I've had a great experience here.
