This is HowToPlayAnySong.com. My name is Joe Wiles with the Rock and Roll
Conservatory and in this video we're looking at the Red Hot Chili Pepper's Under
the Bridge. Well the cool thing about this song is when
this came out the Chili Peppers was just another early 90's alternative band but this is
the song that popped them into mainstream success and is generally regarded as the turning
point in their legendary career. In this video tutorial we're going to take a look at
the introduction, the verse riff as well as the chorus riff. Let's get started.
\b Intro\ \
\b0 The introduction for under the bridge, there\'92s a finger method to do it in which
you wouldn\'92t use a Capo, it would sound like this, but if you use a Capo it\'92s a
hell of a lot easier. Lets put our Capo on the 2nd fret and cheat a little bit. It sounds
like this. \ On this now you\'92d form a C chord it\'92s
a little bit easier, you have the use of your index finger now, which just makes it a lot
easier. We\'92re going to start out with the Capo on the 2nd fret. Our ring finger on the
5th fret of the A, our middle finger on the 4th fret of the D and your index finger on
the 3rd fret of the B.\ Your going to hit the pick on the A string
and use your ring finger to hit the B string at the same time. Then you\'92re going to
hit the D string, G, the D, then the B string then the G. That chord sounds like this. \
Then there\'92s a little riff to transition to the next chord. We\'92re going to start
on the 4th fret of the A. Then the 2nd fret which is the Capo, then the 5th fret of the
low E, the 4th fret of the low E. \ Then we\'92re going to put our middle finger
on the fourth fret of the A, our ring finger on the 4th fret of the D and our index finger
on the 3rd fret of the G like that. Then we\'92re going to hit the low E string and the B string
at the same time. Then the A-D-A-G back to D. That chord sounds like this. \
There\'92s another riff to transition back to the other chord. It\'92s going to be the
same chord but the riff goes, that 4th fret of the D, open D which is actually to the
2nd fret. \ Then the 5th fret of the A, open A, then 4th
fret of the A hammer onto the 5th fret and at that moment we\'92re going to start that
\ We\'92ll hit that one then we\'92ll hit the
D, then the A, then the G and the D, then the B. Then we\'92re going to hammer on our
pinky to the 3rd fret then release it, a hammer one then a pull off. That part sounds like
this. \ Then we hit the A and the D together, slide
is a bunch of normal chords, but way up high. We\'92re going to start on the 12th fret of
the low E string with our index finger. \ \
Our ring finger\'92s going to be on the 14th fret of the A string. Our pinky\'92s going
to be on the 14th fret of the D string, and our middle finger here is going to be on the
13th fret of the G. This is the first chord. It\'92s an E major, and you\'92re only going
to strum those four. \ \
The next chord is a B major. We\'92re going to slide this exact same shape down to the
7th fret, 7, 9, 9, 8. Strum those low four. Then we\'92re going to slide the lowest three,
these three, up to the 9, 11, 11. \ \
Lay our index finger down on the 9th fret of the high three strings, and just give it
a quick strum. Then we\'92re going to come down to the 4th fret of the E, 6th fret of
the A, 6th fret of the D, and 4th fret of the G. Slide this whole thing up one but move
your middle finger to the 6th fret. So it\'92ll be 5, 7, 7, 6. This is what that sounds like
slowly. \ \
The next phrase is exactly the same thing, except we don\'92t hit this chord on the 4th
fret. It sounds like this. \ \
Just like that. Let\'92s try that to speed. Here we go. One, two, three, four. Repeat
that again.\ \pard\pardeftab720\ri720\sa200\ql\qnatural

\b Chorus\ \
\b0 The chorus to \'93Under the Bridge\'94 start with the F sharp minor. Actually, bared
across the 9th fret of all the strings with your index finger. Then we\'92re going to
put our middle finger on the 10th fret of the B, our ring finger on the 11th fret of
the D and our Pinky on the 11th fret of the G. It sounds like this.\
We only going to be aiming for the high strings don\'92t worry so much about the lower ones.
It\'92ll sounds like, like that. \ The next chord we\'92re going to use is an
E major, we\'92re going to bar the entire 7th fret and then I lay one finger across
the 9th fret of the D, G and B, sounds like this. I am only aiming for the middle four,
this time.\ Now, we\'92re going to play B major which
is keeping your finger across the 7th fret here, ring finger on the 9th fret on the A,
pinky on the 9th fret of the D and middle finger on the 8th fret of the G and aim for
the high strings, and then we\'92re going to go back to that F sharp minor, it sounds
like this slowly, one, like that. This is what it sounds like to speed, one, two, three,
four, one, and you just repeat it.\ Thanks for watching. I hoped you learned something.
