Teaching is a passion. I don't think a person lasts in the profession unless they're
passionate about it. If you get a chance to influence a kid, to awaken them to something
new, to turn them on to something that's worthwile, and to help them set their sights on something
that maybe they weren't so sure about earlier.
We're charged with one of the most, the most valuable commodities in the world, which is
our students, our kids. And we have to do our job right, and if we don't then we're
cheating our entire society.
You understand that when you're teacher of the year, that all of a sudden you have a
voice for all of the other teachers you represent. That's a humbling experience because there
are fabulous teachers in the school besides myself and all around the state. Oh you know,
the kids like to say, "oh senor your the teacher of the year, you're the 'best teacher'".
I work hard at it, no question about it, but I don't kid myself. I'm not the best teacher
in the state, that's for sure. I tried other things, you know, I worked in several other
jobs, but I came back to teaching because it's a calling -it calls you back. Some of
us have no choice but to teach. Somebody asked me one time, what do you consider a success?
To me, a success is when I'm able to get a kid to do more than he or she thinks they can do.
