Rick Baehner, M.D.: Let me tell you about a recent experience with a patient who received
a DCIS score. The patient was 58 years old. She had an abnormal mammogram that showed
calcifications. She had a lumpectomy and the pathologist identified a 1.6 cm DCIS lesion
that was intermediate grade, known as non-comedo necrosis. The patient discussed her options
with her surgeon and before they got the DCIS score, they were considering radiotherapy.
Upon receiving the DCIS score, the patient had a low risk DCIS score that was 26. Remember,
the score ranges from 0 to 100. This put the patient in a very low risk of recurrence,
14% for either DCIS or an invasive recurrence and 6% risk of actually developing an invasive
recurrence. This information gave both the patient and the surgeon the confidence to
make a treatment decision and a treatment decision that did not include radiation therapy.
