Hi, on behalf of Expert Village.com I am Shelly with AA Calister in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Today we are talking about how to choose a winter horse blanket. Now a heavy weight blanket
is going to be a blanket that has usually a 1200 denier. So the outer covering is 1200
which means its wove tighter and keeps out more wind and water. The insulation value
on a heavy weight blanket is going to be usually around 12 - 14 ounces of fill for a heavy
weight blanket. Its for blankets for climates that get down to about 20 degrees. So if your
coldest nights get down to about 20 degrees then you're gonna want to consider a heavy
weight blanket. Now what some people will do is purchase 2 blankets. They will get one
a light weight for the spring and fall and then they will move up to a heavy weight for
the winter months when it gets really cold. December, January, whens its really cold then
they will put a heavy weight blanket on their horse because the weather has gotten colder.
So you are going to want to consider that into your purchase of what your climate is
like. Does it get down to 20 degrees at night or even lower and then you are going to want
to go to a heavy weight blanket.
