Michael attends weekly sessions at Ablelink Dropin Centre as part of the digital inclusions
partnership between Telstra and Able Australia. Michaels only access to technology is via
braille and he attends training to learn how to access his iPhone using this braille Display.
This is an outing that Michael went on and he was really keen to bring his iphone with
him so that he could communicate with his family and let them know what he was up to.
This was a very significant moment for Michael because it was the first time he was able
to take his iPhone with him while he was travelling and keep in contact.
In this training session he is using an iPad and the difference here is he is using a regular
QWERTY keyboard. In the other clips, you will see he is using a braille keyboard to type
into the iPad. Michael is now receiving Peer Training with
another man who is deaf and blind. In this training session he is learning how to use
email. He feels he has mastered his SMS text and he has mastered some of his Apps but he
hasnt quite mastered how to send and receive email.
This form of communication is called Tactile Auslan and both of these men use Auslan as
their language and as they lost their sight they were able to transfer into reading back
Auslan via tactile. Peer training is a sensational way for the
clients to have one on one time and also they tend to be able to explain concepts much better
as they are both using their first language. These sessions are very successful.
