operating bandsaw cutting ipe logs into ipe boards part 2
here the wagon with the wood log on it approaches the sawband
the operator of the wagon spaces the wood log for a 1" cut
the first slice is being cut to scare the lo into a block
here only bark comes off which is of no use
the wagon goes back and the operator spaces again the next 1" cut
the next slice is being cut
this board is not just bark and so is good for edging boards out of it
once again the entire wagon goes back and once again the operator spaces 1"
a third slice is being cut, now with less bark, less sapwood and ...
more wood for more boards to be cut in the next edging phase
as you can see, edging needs to be done to get rid of the bark on both sides of the wood board
and again the wagon goes back and again the log is spaced for 1" boards
the logs are being cut with a 7" sawband
this spacing and cutting continues until the heart of the log is reached
the heart of the log always contains cracks and is no good for boards
the operator releases the hooks on the log to the wagon
the hooks are to keep the log stable and fixed on the wagon while cutting straight boards
they rotate the log block to continue cutting
the block is fastened with the same hooks and the next slice is being cut
this is once again just bark
now the second slice is coming of with only one side to be edged
loading a fresh log onto a milling wagon
a chainsaw cuts the log in such a way that a straight log emerges
straight logs are important to achieve a high output of boards
the mill does have a wihch with a hook, but operators choose for manual loading for speed
on the background the wagon is being prepared for the fresh log
