Welcome to Business Communication.
I'm Heidi Schultz, the Lead Professor for the course.
And we're going to be spending the next several weeks
together focusing on how to make you an effective and efficient
business communicator.
So let me talk a little bit about what
I mean by effectiveness and efficiency.
When you put information together
you can't just package it and throw it out there
to see what sticks.
All business communication is audience centered.
In business, your audiences are distracted
and they'll take any excuse to stop reading what you wrote,
or stop listening to what you're saying.
And so if you could put information together
in a way that really targets the needs and the interests
of your audience, then you're more effective.
But it's not enough to just be effective, you are busy.
So my goal is to help you be a faster communicator,
to be a more efficient communicator.
And in my years of analyzing and studying and teaching business
communication, I have found that there
are a number of limited communication patterns for both
speaking and presenting.
And I'm going to teach you those patterns.
And once you internalize those patterns
and memorize those patterns, you'll
be able to plug information into those patterns
and then be quicker.
And get onto the next task or who knows,
maybe even have enough time to leave the office early one day.
So that's what we'll be doing.
We'll also be doing it in an atmosphere of respect
for one another, because we're going
to be giving lots of feedback and getting lots of feedback.
And we're going to have to share our work with one another.
But it's all with the goal of making us better at what we do.
So we'll be looking at writing and speaking, analyzing writing
and speaking.
But more important than that, you'll
be doing a lot of writing and speaking.
And again, at the end then, my goal
is to have you become a more efficient and effective
business communicator.
We'll have some fun along the way, so I look forward to it.
I hope you do too.
