Hi this is Miranda Thacker with your KYTC Minute. Motorists in Hardin County are adjusting
to a new type of intersection. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has completed construction
of a roundabout at the intersection of KY 1600 and KY 220 in Rineyville. The roundabout
construction project was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 at a
cost of $488,000. Roundabouts are becoming a more popular highway design in the United
States. They facilitate a constant, even flow of traffic with minimal stopping. Benefits
include reduced congestion and greater safety, generally at less cost. Transportation Cabinet
engineers say the Rineyville intersection was a good fit for the roundabout concept.
Other projects have included roundabouts in Fayette, Kenton and Campbell counties. Another
is being constructed in Daviess County. A video tutorial about driving roundabouts
is available at the link below and on the cabinet’s YouTube channel. The Transportation
Cabinet also reminds students, teachers and parents that the deadline for the Adopt-a-Highway
Poster Contest is September 30. Entry forms and contest rules are available at adopt-a-highway.ky.gov.
