Paolo: I was just discussing with a friend of mine who's a concert maestro of the orchestra in Palermo in Italy.
And he told me you know it's a wonderful feeling when you go to the pool
and you're having
30 minutes- 40 minutes swimming.
And I was of course with my job there's
a lot of stress.
A lot of responsibilities,
several course to learn, several musicians to
convince.
I needed something
to get out of the
stress. And so that's the reason why I tried to swim
because of the suggestion of all this musicians, the orchestra.
In Frankfurt in Germany,
I was a musical director in Frankfurt at that time.
and I met a coach there and he told me to, "Yes you are not so bad , maybe you could
swim better if you are working
a little more on your technique.
And so
I started to have a couple of sessions with him
and
he showed me in
YouTube,
Internet
some videos about
Total Immersion. I was absolutely so
so happy to find
this way to swim, because it's not
powered, it's not muscled. Just
graceful way, and elegant way.
And I think
this is
exactly
what i'm looking for. Something
against my stress, something to have a
good feeling that
every part of my body
and I can use in my job as well.
Because if you're feeling well,
musician feeling well as well.
And that if you are conducting with your
harmony, your movement. The sound is becoming much,...much beautiful.
More beautiful than
just doing something
with your muscles.
Terry: When you are feeling well, can you feel the musicians responding to that?
Paolo: Absolutely! Every musician is waiting for you,
is waiting for your attention.
Is waiting for your entrance.
And if you are
coming with a
bad feeling, of course all the people are getting
not relaxed and the results could not be better. Terry: Yeah.
For some reason I find Total Immersion as something fantastic.
I want to
work in this professional way, not because I want to
be a professional swimmer. But I
use it to work the music in a professional way. So
I'm used to doing that
you know if I'm not able
to do something very good, I do
Slow
and then
until you can
achieve your results. Terry: So you felt that there's a good match
between your swimming now and your profession
in particular because Total Immersion
really emphasizes swimming as an art
rather than as a sport?
Paolo: Exactly! That's the reason I'm a fan
of a...
Because
if you are
to be careful about your movement,
about your
recovery, about your catch. It's not something
to do with muscles,
it's just harmony. And if I'm
doing and orchestral movement like that.
I have a graceful sound, and if I move like that
of course the sound is aggressive.
Terry: Harsher
Paolo: Harsher, yes.
And
for me it's
the best way to know
better my body, to know better my mood in.
In an element is water, is not our usual element.
Terry: And so we swam together today, which and you told me that it is your
preference to practice swimming before you can conduct your performance. Paolo: Yes
because
it's the only
way to swim
that you are not tired after.
You are so happy with yourself, you
have a lot of energy inside. And
you are in the best shape to
work with other people.
Terry: And we did sink swimming today, that was your first time?
to do sink swimming? Paolo: Oh yes, absolutely!
Could you imagine my first time sink swimming
and we have Terry Laughlin, so I'm really very lucky, lucky guy.
Oh it's fantastic because, of course
in this case you were very patient with me, because you were
coordinating your movement with mine.
But you know, the feeling that you are not alone.
Several people can have the same movement,
the same feeling,
thee same energy together. It's like
in orchestra Terry: Yeah.
Paolo: they play everybody together to score. It's exactly the same feeling.
So maybe swimmers as they are swimming together,
together to
achieve a wonderful performance. Terry: So we'll find out tonight if
may be sink swimming is even
a little better
performance preparation than swimming solo. Paolo: I am very happy to try now
in an hour starting, I can see you after that. Terry: Okay.
Paolo: Instead of water I have
sound. I have to be careful, if my catch is not good enough
the sound will not be good enough, you know it's a reaction of my movement. And it's like to be in the water
need to swim in the water. Terry: So you try to make
your movements fluent in the water and then.
Paolo: Yes, that's a good possibility Terry: on the podium Paolo: Yes to have a training. Not only swimming
but
to know better my movement and to have
a better movement
to show to the
musicians, to play and make them
comfortable.
