My name is Sebastian and
I'm doing GCSEs in English Maths
ICT Art and Music
I like sports
I extremely like sports, I love it, it's my life really
Um.. the difficulties what I had
was like um... talking
uh... listening
understanding
socialising and er
understanding
Really those are the main things
It is
everything
if you do not have vocabulary, if you do not have language if we do not have
the reasoning
it is extremely difficult
extremely
difficult to
exist in our society today, to live
cannot society today. When I talk to someone I talk to them like
straight and they don't get it and I'm trying to like make it clear and make
them understand but it's really hard
for them to understand and it's hard for me because I don't know how to make it
clear
Seb has difficulties with both his expressive and receptive language which
means he has difficulty
organising his thoughts and views and opinions into coherent and structured
sentences
as well as difficulties understanding what he hears, understanding what he
reads and just really understanding the world around him. If you were to go say in
another country and someone was speaking to you in a totally different language
and you had to do the exactly the same things you do on a day to day basis
things you were familiar with but
totally in a different environment, totally different language, totally different
interpretation of language
Just yourself there. Do you think you would survive?
Seb found it very difficult to express himself he couldn't find the right words
which led to a lot frustration and then angry outbursts as a way of expressing that
He had terribly low self esteem
he found it very difficult following instructions and to process new
information
When I found things hard, it
was a bit upsetting
and sad and really angry as well, was really frustrating
and annoying
and made me just want to sometimes
go off on a grump
or storm off
or sometimes cry, but it's just
really annoying that I just
get so angry all the time I can't do it
Seb's someone who really wants it and wants to learn and is eager to get
better and better and better
and he's developed the confidence in the support available to him that he will
regularly ask for help or coming in and say this is really difficult please help me
with it, and sort of
helped Seb develop the skills to be able to move on and work more independently
and seek help when he needs it. The help that I had has
completely changed everything my life, and I'm just so happy it has, because
it's helped a lot definitely
I could say so many things it's helped me a lot, it's just completely changed me completely changed today
and I'm so happy that I did
I can talk to people
I can understand people when you talk to other people from different colleges
can talk to my mates when i'm playing football with them at home
Can talk to mainstream kids, I can talk to people in shops
I can ask them where.., I'm just really happy that I can do all that stuff now
Then before I couldn't but I'm really, it's just helped a lot it's just extremely helped
I mean at the moment he's a mentor
to other younger students that also have a speech and language impairment and
that support that he puts in place and the guidance that he gives those students is
just fantastic and it's just, he's made us all really proud and that's really
great for us
