- Hey guys, it's Marissa, and today I'm gonna
be teaching you guys how to fishtail your hair.
If you guys don't already know,
I've already done a few other hairstyle videos.
I've done sporty hairstyles, summer hairstyles,
how to french braid, how to dutch braid.
I'm kind of going along the line
of the simple basic stuff,
so I'm going to do a fishtail braid today.
If you guys wanna learn how to dutch braid,
or French braid, I have other videos linked down
in the description box below.
And the Instagram follow of the day is lilyjohnson26.
Thank you so much for following us on Instagram.

Enough of the intro, now let's just get
onto the fishtailing.
Okay, to get started, I'm going to take this out.
I took a shower this morning,
if you guys actually wanna see my natural hair,
here it is.
It's a little crazy.
My hair is very thick as well.
Like this is my natural hair.
Some days it works, some days it doesn't.
So I'm gonna start off by brushing hair out.
Comment down below if you guys like
to wear your hair down, or if you guys like
to do fancy braids or fishtails, or French braids.
Fishtailing, and Dutch braiding, and French braiding
is a great skill to have if you want
to get better at doing your hair,
because it just goes faster in the morning
rather than straightening, or curling your hair
so if you guys want to learn how
to do your hair faster, this is a great hack too.
Okay, now I'm just gonna get started.
I'm looking at a mirror right here by the way.
I'm going to part my hair down the middle.
Since my hair is really thick,
I'm going to split it into two,
and teach you guys that way, just so it's a little easier,
because most people don't have as thick hair.
Comment down below if your hair is really thick too,
because you guys can relate.
I'm just going to tie it off.
Okay, to start I'm going to gather my hair into like
I would with a pigtail, or ponytail.
Then, section it off into two even sections.
You can adjust it however you want.
Okay, now here is where we start the fishtailing.
It's again, a repetitive process just like braiding.
It's very simple once you get the hang of it.
And I think the hardest part is when you start,
because the hairs are kind of loose.
The first thing you want to do is again, smooth it out.
So then you wanna take an outside piece
from your first section.
I'm just taking kind of where my bangs are,
and talking a small piece,
and then I cross it over to the other section.
And then for the other strand of hair,
I'm doing the exact same thing.
I like to,
can you see this?
I like to use my thumb instead of using my pointer finger,
because it's a little bit easier.
I like to use my thumb, and just get a strand,
and kind of twist the hair around itself
into the other section.
So now you have two strands crossed over,
and we're doing the exact same thing.
I'm using my thumb, kind of wiggling it through there;
getting a strand;
crossing it over;
my thumb;
twisting the hair;
crossing it over.
You can do as big, or little strands as you want.
If you do bigger strands,
it kind of just ends up looking like a braid.
So I kind of just do a medium strands,
because if you do smaller strands it also takes forever.
So this is pretty much the whole entire process, guys.
You just take an outside strand from your first section.
I use my thumb;
cross it over,
and outside section;
cross it over.
I'll just let you guys kind of watch it.
It kind of takes some practice to get used
to moving your hands like this,
kind of twisting it, and using your thumb.
But you guys will get the hang of it.
I keep doing this process until the end of my hair.
And now I'm going to zoom you guys in a little more,
so you can get a better close up of it.
(relaxing music)
And a little tip for you guys.
Try, and get the two sections as even as you can
through out the braiding, so it kind of looks better.
And I'm just, as you can see wiggling my thumb
to get the outside strands.
Okay, now I'm just going to finish off the fishtail,
It gets harder once you're at the bottom,
because your hair is most likely thinner.
At least mine because I get it thinned out.
Just try your best with the small pieces,
and tie it off whenever you want.
Now I'm just going to move onto the other side,
and do the exact same thing.
And if you guys haven't noticed.
I've been doing the hair videos,
and Brookie has been doing slime videos.
So comment down below if you guys like
how we're doing that.
Because Brookie is more into slime,
and I'm more into hair.
So, that's what we've been doing.
But of course, we still do videos together as well.
(relaxing music)
This is hairstyle one.
I think this is super cute, and it's so like different
rather than just a three-strand normal braid.
I think this will look cute on anybody,
short, or long hair.
And now I'm gonna show you guys hairstyle number two.
Okay as I'm taking this out.
I actually think it looks super pretty
when you take fishtails out.
My hair is still a tiny bit damp
from when I took a shower this morning.
So that's like another like heat-less hairstyle.
Put fishtail braids in during the night,
and you can have some beachy waves.
Okay, and now for hairstyle number two.
This one is also super simple.
This involves two fishtails, into a messy
ponytail.
I don't know hot to explain it.
So again, I'm going to use my middle part,
and bring one side over my shoulder.
And I want to take, I don't know, maybe like
kind of just the front pieces of your hair,
and then I'm going to do a fishtail all the way down.
So I'll do a little time-lapse so you guys don't have
to wait through the whole thing.
And also make sure to aim the fishtail kind of diagonal
back into a low ponytail.
The bigger the section you pick up,
the bigger the pieces you will have cross over.
So mine as you can tell is going to be pretty small.
So if you guys want to do a bigger one,
if you guys wanna do a smaller one,
kind of just to your preference;
whatever you like better.
And throughout the fish bone braid you can pull it apart
a little bit, give it some volume.
And here is my fish bone so far.
It is pretty tiny, so it'll take a while.
Okay, and I'm not going to go all of the way down
because that's kind of just a waste so I'm stopping
with about that much left.
Again, I'm going to tie if off,
and do a dramatic pull on the pieces
to loosen them up a bit.
So as you can see, I have my first fishtail done,
and now I'm going to repeat the process on this side.
Okay, kinda look a little crazy right now,
but I have my two fishtails done.
I've kind of pulled both of them apart;
made them look a little messier.
So here is this one.
Here's that one.
And now I'm going to pull it back.
I'm not going to put these in quite yet.
But I'm gonna pull my hair back into a ponytail.
I don't want it to be super clean.
Clean as in slicked back.
Then I'm going to add in one of my fishtails,
and add in the other fishtail,
and tie it off.
So now that I have those in, I'm going to pull out,
I don't even know what to call them.
Little whispies.
Pull out the ponytail a little bit.
So next, I'm going to use one of my fishtails,
and actually wrap it around my ponytail
in the back so you can't see the elastic.
And my strategy to hide it is I use a bobby pin,
and pin my elastic under my ponytail so you don't see it.
Okay, and there you have the finished hairstyle.
I'm going to get a closeup of it
so you guys can see it,
but here is the second fishtail hairstyle.
I think this is super cute;
adds a little something to your ponytail.
It does take a longer time if you do smaller sections,
but if you wanna faster in the morning,
just do a bigger section for a fishtail.
Actually I think that would look a little cooler,
and a little more noticeable,
but here is the finished hairstyle.
