Steering precision is very important since it is really a performance that the
consumer, driver will perceive directly.
In practice, this is the ability or the aptitude of a tyre
to respond to commands from the steering wheel.
Some tyres will react very quickly, they will be very
precise, they will follow the line and the steering angle will be
instinctive. Certain tyres will be very direct and others less, so
they will require a greater steering turning angle.
Significant differences can be felt in terms of perception, feeling,
between the different price levels that can be found on the market.
It is true that this is most obvious when lapping the track as with
our comparison, where we have high performance tyres featuring advanced
technological developments, with very sophisticated compounds which will remain
consistent over the laps. This means that we will drive 1 lap of the track, 2 laps
of the track, 3 laps of the track ... The performance level will remain
the same. With tyres featuring less advanced
technology, tread compounds which are less sophisticated and a less intricate
tread design, we will be in a more restricted performance spectrum.
This means that perhaps the tyre will deliver good grip over a
temperature range and after suddenly disappear. Or else we may
have behaviours which are highly
exaggerated with a good level of grip, but which can be lost very
suddenly, a high tendency to oversteer, and a vehicle which starts to slide or
jerk but not at all progressively. It is really in this type of performance
that notable differences can be found between different budget ranges
and different tyre brands.
