Why does the synagogue not exist anymore?
When Vilnius was bombed in 1944 it was damaged.
When we go to the museum I'lll show you how it appeared.
There were ideas...Later they built a kindergarden.
There are people who have the idea that we should (re)build.
the old synagogue. But you know the Yiddish saying:
"Corpses don't get put back upright after the cemetery."
We can't change history. Now I'll show you where the
"Remaylas" Yeshiva was, at the synagogue courtyard.
There's a big German church here which was built in 1555.
An old church. The Soviets stored wood there. It's been reestablished.
And when Germans visit I'll go with them to the church.
Look, here's a photo of the synagogue. From the great synagogue.
Here's the Oren Koydesh (holy arc).
There's a good photo in the museum.
We have the photo in the library too.
This was the shul-hoyf here (synagogue courtyard).
It was destroyed. I don't know why.
It was burned down as the Germans were leaving. Half of it survived.
Now as we continue the houses that you see were built after the war.
I'll show you the border. This was the alley, you see that house,
that was yatkever street (butcher street), the first and second butcher streets.
So this was where the synagogue was back then.
