Auckland City Council
is holding up a kohanga reo's request to erect a new building.
This is the current roadblock
hindering Te Rangimaria Kohanga Reo's progress.
This building is crumbling.
They hope to build a new one.
Five years ago,
we noticed the building was starting to deteriorate.
The kohanga and the Kohanga Reo National Trust explored
having the building repaired,
but it turned out to be really expensive.
It was cheaper to buy a new building.
So we could work out how much it would cost
and how to go about getting a new building.
These are the buildings they want to demolish
to build a new one here.
They're still waiting for the Auckland Council
to know whether or not they're going to extend their lease,
because last year they were going to be moved for a park and ride.
We're still waiting for the Auckland Council
to get back to us regarding the renewal of the lease.
That's what's holding us back for now.
Last week, I sent an email
to the council about the lease situation.
However, I'm still waiting, just like the kohanga.
For now, though, this ceiling is sheltering these kohanga children.
