The first woman to jump off the Hollywood sign her name, Peg Entwistle. She was born
in Wales in nineteen-oh-four, and when her mother died at age fourteen, she traveled
to America and became an actress. She was actually in eight Broadway plays including
one with Humphrey Bogart. Now she was working, but each until the place failed. So she came
west to Hollywood and was signed by RKO. And in nineteen thirty-two did appear in one film
entitled "Thirteen Women" playing a woman Hazel Cousins, who was caused to kill her
husband by Myrna Loy, playing a half cast woman who was seeking vengeance against those
who were her classmates in school that she felt had wronged her. Her name, Ursula Georgie.
I'll ask you in a moment what Ursula stands for. But our friend here Peg Entwistle was
listed ninth in the cast, not a bad role for her first movie appearance. But she was still
not happy with her career. So on a Sunday, September eighteenth, nineteen thirty-two
where she was living with her uncle, near the shadow of the Hollywood sign. At that
time it was actually the Holly Woodland sign. She climbed up, this is a Sunday. Climbed
up the ladder that a workman had left, to the H. got aboard on top of the H and jumped
to her death. Now a double irony here. The very next day, Monday morning, a letter arrived
from the Beverly Hills Theater offering her the role of a woman who committed suicide.
Now inconceivably she got the idea to off herself from auditioning for that part. But
if she just waited one more day she might not be being discussed on our show today.
