"We have a threat for tornadoes in central Iowa today."
We were trying to find during a typical tornado season where most of the tornadoes are likely
going to occur. What we found is that 20 percent more tornadoes typically occur when this Pacific
Decadal Oscillation is in the warm phase. My name is Laurel McCoy and I'm a graduate
student in the Atmospheric Science Department at the University of Missouri. During the
warm phase we've found that we get more tornadoes in the western and northwestern regions of
the tornado alley such as Texas, Oklahoma. In the cool phase, we typically see them in
the Alabama Mississippi region.
The work Laurel's done will help in the long range forecasting area. My name is Dr. Anthony
Lupo and I'm a professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Missouri. Advances have
been made and we can routinely beat climatology so much so businesses and policy makers are
using these type of forecasts to plan ahead.
What we hope for our research it can be used as a tool for states to use for budget planning
for tornado relief during a typical summer or spring season.
