Using Second Life in teaching
Greetings to everyone interested in virtual worlds and welcome to Second Life.
Let’s go and have a look what kind of educational places we can find
and what kind of activities we can do together with our students.
Let’s start from Sotunki high school’s Island.
As you can see, an extensive set for learning has been built here.
At the moment I am standing on the learning path of western literature,
which covers the styles of different ages.
Notice that you can find matching exercises by clicking the apples.
like this.
You don’t have to be a student in Sotunki to come here and explore.
This island is free and open for everyone.
Sotunki has also covered other subjects besides literature.
This is the biology forest.
And what can we find here?
Looks like some sort of videos.
video: lobule of the liver
mmm, interesting
There are also many 3-dimensional models of actual places in Second Life,
like St Paul’s Cathedral here.
Perhaps this place could be explored together with students
instead of a traditional slide show.
Many real businesses and organizations have also moved to Second Life,
for example Nasa.
My colleague told me that IBM has a lot of activities in Second Life.
Let's see what we can find.
All sorts of content can be found..
Oh, but I seem to have lost my focus,
as my mission was to find suitable environments for schools.
Sometimes I get carried away in virtual worlds.
Let's return to High School Island and see what the students have done.
In Konnevesi High School Second Life has been experimented in physical education, English and history.
Let’s see what the students made in the history class.
The topic of the course was Second World War and the Crystal Night (Kristallnacht).
Students were brought into Second Life and their mission was to explore the Holocaust museum.
They explored the museum, gathered information and took pictures.
Then they made PowerPoint presentations that can still be found from High School Island.
