Dr. Michael Boucree: After completing my residency in Washington, D.C. in internal medicine I
was assigned to Flint, Michigan as a National Health Service Course Scholar. My initial
interest was to be a concert pianist but I chose medicine. Both of them are jealous lovers.
U of M-Flint gave me the opportunity to pursue my passion, my desire to at this age, become
a concert pianist, but an amateur concert pianist. The faculty were very, very, very
supportive. The one thing that you never want to do is have a bad performance. But you don't
want to have a bad performance not only because of what it does to your own reputation, you
don't want to embarass your teacher. I thought it would be very strange, in terms of going back to school. School was really
just the vehicle to achieve the goal that I wanted. I was not the oldest individual
in class, but my classmates were wonderful. They helped me through. I helped them through.
And age was really just a number because in music it really is about expression and that's
what we're about, expressing the music. It was such a pleasurable experience and again
it was pursuing the passion in my heart, which tickled my mind. I had the pleasure of mentoring
a young man, who was going into college. I said pursue the intellects of your mind, but
don't forget the passions of your heart. U of M-Flint is there to say we can help you
move through another door, at least give you access to another opportunity. The challenges
were presented to me, opportunities were presented to me, and had I not gone through the door,
I wanted be here talking with you now.
