Web-safe colors are so 1998. Graphic designers everywhere will be thrilled
to know that you can throw them all away and use whatever color you want on
your websites. Some designers learned about web-safe colors
when they were in art school. There were 216 colors that were supposed to
be identical between Mac and PC platforms. It worked great when we use 256 color palettes,
but now that most monitors support millions of colors, the web-safe color
is moot. The differences between the platforms and
the monitors are very subtle these days. Use whatever colors you wish on your site.
Keep in mind that very pastel colors often don't display well on flat screen monitors.
You may want to test very light colors on multiple monitor setups to make sure
the color is visible. But again, that's just very pale pastel colors.
So throw out your web-safe colors and rejoice. Use whatever colors you like in your web designs.
