Hi. My name is Kirsten Segler and I'm from The Greenery.
I want to talk a little bit about
tomato hanging baskets. This is something that's becoming very popular
especially with people who don't have space for a typical garden
but they still love their Cherry Tomatoes
but putting them in hanging baskets like this enables them to hang it up on the deck
and
patio and still enjoy fresh cherry tomatoes throughout the season
for salads and that kind of thing.
This is an example of a variety called Red Robin so it's very compact bush variety
no pruning or anything necessary. This is how it grow. This will obviously
get a bit bigger but just
branches
internally and this will get sort of
bigger like this and break down just
a bit more like that and
enough for a small family
for the whole season. You get enough food off from one thousand like this.
They're just starting to
ripen up now.
Now we do other trailing varieties which worked very well in hanging baskets as well.
We will show you
some footage of those.
These will get a lot bigger,
long, cascading branches that
will make a large sort of trailing
tomato hanging basket.
This is an example of a trailing tomato arrangement. Here we use the
topsy-turvy type of basket where you plant the plant
in the base of the arrangement.
We do these but mainly we do the twelve-inch, regular twelve-inch
baskets with the five plants planted at the top
and it simply will grow up and cascade down, end up just looking like a
really uniform,
longer trailing arrangement but
right now we're just showing you this as an example.
This variety is called Losetto. This is a new variety for us this year.
Well, new to everyone. A new variety on the market.
Generally we use a variety called Tumbler so we are going to compare this
one in
in a way of growth habits and yield and even taste to see if
it will make our list for
the years to come.
So far looks very good,
heavy production.
ou see here
loads of tomatoes starting
on all branches.
So just like Tumbler, it is almost more more tomato than leaf as it develops and we
will do some
filming of this arrangement and others throughout the season just to see
how the production
and yield is
but so far we're really pleased.
