This is Deputy Chief Henry Watson with the New Bern Fire-Rescue in New Bern, North Carolina.
In this segment we're going to discuss the proper techniques for using a fire extinguisher.
Before you operate any fire extinguisher, remember to stay low and always approach from
upwind. You want to pull the fire extinguisher, or pull the pin, aim at the base of the fire,
let it fly, let's do that again. Aim the fire extinguisher at the base of the fire, squeeze
and sweep. Remember to pull the pin, aim the fire extinguisher at the base of the flames,
squeeze the handle, sweep. Sweep the extinguishing agent beginning at the closest edge to you,
working away and from side to side. You want to continue to blanket this area until after
the fire has gone out and as you back away. Remember never turn your back on a fire, it
could reignite and catch you off guard.
