Of the Educational Audiology Association, I must say it's probably the membership
that I most value. We are made up of educational audiologists, speech
pathologists, who work with the deaf and hard of hearing, teachers of the deaf,
and also pediatric audiologists.
So we provide
the link between the clinical setting into the school setting.
So
some of our
focus right now
is on our summer conference, in 2013, we are preparing for
Arizona.
We also have two webinars coming up;
one in May,
and then one in June
on educational audiology;
and we've also just started providing continuing education credits with the
Journal of Educational Audiology. We have about 600 members right now.
I am on the membership board and also a board member.
So my job is to
encourage membership and to reach out to audiologists in
different states to talk about what
our organization can do for you. Probably one of the biggest values is our
ListServ.
It is very active, and this was paramount for me when I started, because
I could go to the ListServ and say I'm having this problem with this
particular hearing aid with this particular FM, has anyone experienced
this? And I would get a flood of emails of people making suggestions and helping
out.
So tell me about the upcoming EAA summer conference.
Well it is in the preplanning stages right now, but we do have a date.
It kicks off with a poster session on June 26th,
and sessions are June 27th and 28th. And it's in
Scottsdale, Arizona, at Montelucia Resort, and we've actually moved the
conference to June because of the response from our membership. We used to
have it in July which conflicted with a lot of occasions. We have always had top-notch
speakers. Jack Katz one year spoke on auditory processing; Jane Madell
on techniques for testing children;
Karen Anderson,
she has great techniques to determine if maybe a child is ready
for the mainstream and she recently just completed a book regarding that.
Doug Sladen, cochlear implants;
Therese Walden on aural rehabilitation for children with cochlear
implants.
So
a lot of
topics focused on pediatrics and educational audiology
which would be beneficial for the educational audiologist or even those
who don't necessarily work in the schools.
