Bruckner Street!
And welcome to...
- Cologne! - ...Lindenthal.
There we are!
- I guess they're still sleeping... at 11:50 am...
- Yeah dude, it's all still closed...
- Are you kidding? - No... look, it's a Tobi Nelles.
- Okay. So as every year, we're having a short presentation at the beginning.
- So, the plan for today: well, arrival now at 4pm, and the first thing is to get to know each other. We'll play some games.
- At 5:30 pm, we'll have the test building, Niclas will do that,
because as you know, we have some standard rules for setting up the dominoes, and we will just show you those things again.
- The name's Fabian... - Raspel!
- Hi, I'm Niclas and I'm new here. I'm a trainee since last week.
- My name is Tobias... but I'm also called millionendollarboy, or Million.
...or also Onedollarboy... or Million Dollar Baby...
- I'm participating for the first time... although I had the misfortune to get to know some of the team earlier already!
- I'm Tim, I'm 20 years old and I study Computer Science in Media in Weimar.
- You may call him "God" because he made sure every field has a field protocol this year.
- So far, it's just one lonely cactus.
...and Marco at the masterplan.
- You and me have a total of 27 years of experience with this hobby. We obviously rule...
- You have failed. - That's what I was trying to say, Simon.
- I just wanted to make it clear to the YouTube viewers. - Okay, so can you topple that while leaving the brown part standing?
- Sure he can... 27 years of experience!
- And guess who's testing the cactus?
- The field of fear is completed.
- O my god, so many boxes that we have all emptied.
- Lunch! - What, now already? - Yeah!
- The catering at CDT is incredible, isn't it?
- How awesome is this?!
- What a blue sky... we're having the day off!
"250,000 dominoes: Cologne's record supposed to topple"
- This is how we stay mentally fit at CDT...
- Behind the Blocks: everything works on the first take... - We are the most professional actors ever!
- Stop laughing over there!
- The other foot!
- Man, it is incredibly hot here! We're sweating at 50 °C here just for this stupid show!
- Just to hunt some buffalos!
- Very last test run of the show...
- Now you have a better impression of how much work this takes...
- Ladies and Gentlemen, before we start with the event, I need to mention some safety rules to you.
Please move carefully around here and do not cross the barriers.
Please do not take pictures with a photoflash, this would disrupt our footage and the concentration of the Challenge builders. Our event will be available on YouTube.
In case of an emergency, exits are to your left: in the middle of the hall and right next to the bleachers.
We'd like to ask you to be silent during the Builder's Challenge. Please switch off electronical devices and keep loose things in your pockets. And now, have fun with the event.
For many years, Indian tribes and Cowboys battled fiercely.
The reasons were heated arguments in saloons or ridiculous disputes on the ownership of land areas.
The high number of losses on both sides finally made them realize the insanity of those endless battles.
They left each other alone; but a reconciliation did not take place.
Until an incident that nobody would normally assign any importance to changed everything.
For two days, the boy lay helplessly wounded in the forest.
Until out of all people, it was an Indian who crossed his path.
- What happened to you? - My foot! It hurts so much!
- Oh god, did you fall? Wait... I have something to help...
- Oh, *** Younger... I have not seen my son for two days... I have no idea where he could be.
Can you try to find him?
- I will not disappoint you.
- Hey, I found this boy in the forest... he fell and hurt his foot... is he one of yours?
- My son! - HEY! DID YOU KIDNAP HIM, YOU??
- He saved me, man! He didn't do anything, stop it!
- You saved him? - He saved me.
- I appreciate it very much.
This simple gesture of friendship opened the path to a lasting peace.
Not long afterwards, they met to smoke the peace pipe together and celebrate the long overdue conciliation.
And that is the story until today.
One short request to you before we continue - there are still many people waiting outside and we have actually some space left, so if you please moved up on the benches. Thank you.
- And with that, welcome to CDT 2013, our 6th event! The goal today, of course, is to break our own record once again.
- So we just saw it in the introduction video: The Indians and Cowboys are finally getting along with each other
after arguing for so long; and that's why today's event is also a celebration of the two parties, celebrating that they finally leave peacefully together.
Niclas already mentioned that this isn't our first event - our team was founded six years ago, so this is our 6th event already.
And we now want to show you what happened in the last years; this is our biggest event, but the earlier ones contained lots of dominoes, too,
so here's a short video, about 2 minutes, that shows scenes from the last events.
- Thank you. So now we want to give you a short overview on the 285,000 dominoes that we have set up here.
- Here in front of you, there's the Indian, shown in a special field where some dominoes are glued to make out the shape - that will be a nice effect;
we have the Grand Canyon, we have Indian symbols and the buffalo hunt.
Over here, we will tell the story of a criminal being tracked down in a Wild West town.
The project here is the saloon, which will hold some surprises, too,
before we proceed to the last part of the hall and show the saloon from the inside, with gambling and everything,
and then, in the end, there will be the good old Builder's Challenge.
- Niclas just mentioned the Challenge. So a Builder's Challenge is a task that makes a falldown even more exciting.
because some builders will have to fill a gap there while the chain reaction is already going on, and only that makes sure that a certain part topples.
So in this case, we have our big final field here; of that field, the middle part will topple first, but just that part,
and then there's the rest of the field around it - and that will only topple if the gap is filled by the builders.
But they don't just need to set up dominoes. There are these glasses, which are filled with a non-alcoholic beverage,
and the builders have to empty those, turn them around, and then set up dominoes on them.
And all of that in half a minute.
We have carefully considered who to chose for this task, and yesterday in the morning we made a decision.
The two then practised all day, they also practised today a bit, and now we hope they are 100% ready for this -
and the two are Fabian and Johanna, standing over there - we hope they're the right guys to do this.
The two will now go over there, into the Challenge section, and prepare everything;
and while they do that, we will show a short video on the setup of the dominoes.
Like I said, it's 285,000 dominoes and took quite some work to set them all up.
So here's short video showing that. Have fun.
Okay, so now I can announce that we are also having two special guests here: a Cowboy and an Indian.
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to our peace meeting of Cowboys and Indians.
Let me introduce myself: My name is Chief White Cactus.
And actually, next to me there should be our Cowboy. With our peace pipe. But he's not here, apparently he's still trying to get that pipe...
- Doesn't he have it with him? - Well, he said he was looking for it, had lost it or something, and I'm telling you one thing:
If he ruins our peace meeting here, I will instantly kick into this wall and you can all go home again!!
- Calm down. Let's just wait a bit, maybe he will still arrive. - He better would.
- Damn it, the pipe!
- Damn it, the pipe... and it was stolen three weeks ago already...
- Hey, have you seen my peace pipe? I've been looking for it all day.
- Hm, look over there maybe. That's where Old Johnson lives, he buys all kinds of stuff - even from thieves. Over there. -Thanks! - Sure.
- Hey, are you Old Johnson? - Yes I am.
- Do you happen to have seen a peace pipe?
- No. I have never seen such a thing, mate. - Damn.
- Dang it, I can't find any trace! There must be some way to find it!
- Heard of or seen a peace pipe in the meantime by any chance?
- No, young lad. I still can't help you.
- Damn, I'll never find it!
- Wait a second, there it is, dude! - Hey!
- My hat!
- Sorry... - *** Younger, finally! Where have you been?!
- Here, the pipe, sorry, I had left it somewhere... - Yeah, well, we're in a hurry,
we're having lots of people here, so let's just quickly smoke the pipe and then start the chain reaction.
- Wait wait wait. It's cool that you want to smoke your peace pipe as a sign of friendship, but in this hall, smoking is not allowed.
- I hope it's okay for you to just go out the door for a moment to smoke.
- Man, all these modern rules! This wouldn't have happened in the Wild West...!
- We will start in a moment then, when they've finished smoking that pipe... apparently they just have to do that, tradition or something. I don't know.
- Stupid smoking ban...
- It's terrible. But who cares, we can just enjoy the pipe here. - Wonderful.
- What's the matter?
- It's totally blocked somehow... take a look...
- You're right, completely blocked... wait...
- A marble...!? - Hey, we can use that to start the falldown! - Yeah, why not!
- You know what? Let's have a smoke on that!
- Let's get back into the hall.
Okay. Smoking always chills you down, and I think we're good friends again, representing our peoples.
- Okay. So we wanted to start the chain reaction now... - Yes. - But the thing is, we don't really know how we're going to do that, we don't have anything for it...
- Well guess what, Simon, there was this marble hidden inside our peace pipe.
- Okay, well I guess we could just use that. So, we're going to start here in a second by just putting that marble in this gun here. Good idea, right?
- Niclas? - Yes? - Then it's up to you to make sure that the right person will start the chain reaction. - Thank you.
And that person will be our janitor Mr Frey. He's been supporting us throughout the preparations.
- So we can now start the countdown...
- All right! I think I can say this went more than well.
There are a few spots where some dominoes didn't topple, here in the front, in the Canyon and at the tipis,
but other than that, almost everything toppled perfectly.
We will now determine how many dominoes toppled exactly; in order to find that out, we will count the ones that didn't. That won't take very long.
And in the meantime, you will be entertained by some music. Our band will play some classics for you.
- I'll just play alone then, fine!
One remark before we start: Unfortunately, almost everything toppled, so we don't have a lot of time and will just play a short session.
And for those of you who have been watching us on YouTube, we will first play the intro of our "Behind the Blocks" show. Let's go.
- Incredible... so what do you say? - Wonderful!
- I have a feeling they'll have me in the team again next year. Hopefully.
- Now this is crazy... Tobi, you're famous! - Yep!
- The counting team has a result. And to announce that result, we would like to ask all of the team to come over here, that's nicer.
We can say that we have broken our own record...
We have also broken the record for the biggest chain reaction of 2013 - worldwide.
And the exact number...
And the exact number of toppled dominoes is 281,257.
We are all extremly happy; but of course, this wouldn't have been possible without the right team, the right people supporting us.
So we want to thank some people now.
Before we thank the people who supported us here at the event, we want to give a shoutout to those people who had to wait outside earlier today.
We are terribly sorry it took so long there, we had some problems with that entrance, we used another door than in the other years and didn't expect it to be so narrow there.
That's why some people had to wait during the show to still get into the hall. We're really sorry and appreciate your understanding, I hope it wasn't too much of a problem.
[Headteacher:] - Okay, so now I can finally thank you. I'm always so proud of "my kids" here, although they aren't really all "my kids" and mostly not even kids from this school.
But for many years now, it has always been almost the same team that travels here.
And I'd like to stress this once more: This event consists not only of this evening here. It's a project of two weeks,
They live together here, they eat here, they cook here, they have a long organisational list hanging in the hallway - they stood at 8:15 am, I think, although I don't know if that really worked...
Everything is organized in detail, they also make music a lot - you could already see earlier that there are some great musicians in the team,
and of that is just a great thing for this school, so I want to thank you all very much on behalf of the school.
I have a bad feeling this might have been the last time this event took place here; as you saw, they even filled the store room with dominoes this time,
and at some point, the capacity of this hall is just at a limit. But we'll have to see what we're going to do there.
Maybe we can get a bigger hall close to this school, so they could still have their "home" here.
Okay. WDR Television was here, and we even have fans worldwide and particularly many fans in Germany -
I just sat next to a family, the one right in front of here now - they are from Bremen [170 miles from Cologne]... they saw this on YouTube,
and the boys even had to go to school this morning, and afterwards, the family jumped into the car and drove here because they so wanted to see this live.
And the boys told me that for their final years of school, they'll move to Cologne so they can participate here... I take that as a promise, guys!
And now I want to really name all of these guys who created this event here, from Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands;
I'll just go through this alphabetically, that's how I got the list. And you can just step up when I call your name.
- Jonathan Bauer... - Bahr! - Bahr, sorry!
Alexander Baron...
He is one of our pupils, he took his final exams this year, but still took the time to help here.
Jakob Bors...
Joel Dähler...
Tobias Demuth...
Alexander Dings...
Sebastian Frey...
Adriane Gerick... [should be Adriana^^]
Alexander Gwosdz...
Kaspar Laaser, who also took his final exams here this year...
Johannes Linnenbrink...
Raphael Mall...
Davy van Megen...
Tobias Nelles...
Fabian Raspel...
Thomas Schäfer...
And now the lady who was one of the Challenge builders: Johanna Schultz...
And another one who graduated here: Simon Stümke...
Niclas Thumm, who already graduated here last year...
Marco Vorbusch...
Tim Weißker...
Then the boy from the Challenge - Fabian Wiesbrock...
And Eva ***!
- Now I obviously missed one name... - Yes, I'm Sarah Gehrmann. - This is Sarah Gehrmann...!
- Okay, and since they've all been sweating so much, I thought they'd get some "comforting washing experiences and unforgettable fragrances".
No, of course not, this is just the bag, there's something else in it.
Last year, they got some circus tickets, and I thought that cinema tickets would be nice this time,
but then Niclas in his infinite wisdom pointed out to me that that's a bit problematic,
because some are already leaving tomorrow and a joint cinema visit will hardly be possible.
So I figured: "Saturn", the store, can be found in most cities, so I got you some coupons. I hope that's something for everybody.
- Well, thank you very much! Many thanks from us.
- I want so say it again: I don't think that something like this exists at any other school. So thank you very much again - please give them a big hand of applause.
- Okay. So we still need to thank some people, that should not be forgotten!
We definitely owe a lot to our janitor, Mr Frey, and his wife!
He helped us in every situation and had a solution for any problem that came up.
We thank the school administration. As Mrs Schulten already said, such an event is a unique thing, and we are very grateful to the school for making it possible.
We also thank Karl-Bernd Burbach, a teacher of ours, who took care of the relations to the media. Thank you very much.
If you like, you can watch this event again on YouTube. Just wait for two days, and then it should be available by typing "CDT 2013" in the search bar.
So have a nice evening, and good trip back home, and see you next year, hopefully. Thank you!
We're happy you all came here; and if there is an event next year - we will do our best despite being busy with university and school -
- It was such an awesome falldown... dude...
- That was it...
- Yes, let's block their way! Sit down strike!
- This is constraint... where's the law student, we need advice...
- Tobi, we all love you...
- Anno, you too, but you're sitting too far away from me.
You will both come for the falldown! - Yes, promised!
- Well, about Kaspar, you need to know that his nicknames are *****, *****, *****, ***** and everything else you can think of.
- Sarah!
...'s girlfriend!
- Realistic Wild West depiction. - It's raining pebbles!
- And then we're going to need a shot of them sitting together and working... building a saloon...
Although I have no idea how we'll do that!
But we'll just take some wooden boards and pretend they'd be building something.
- Some boards! Since there are so many of them around here...!
- There's this psychiatrist - he's called Horst Geyer.
He states that 92... no, 98% of us were idiots.
[Alex:] - I agree.
Horst Geyer! Geyer ["vulture"], you know?
WE... FINISHED... SHOOTING THE VIDEO, SHOOTING THE VIDEO, SHOOTING THE VIDEO...
