uh... ron pollack is with us he is the founding executive director of families
u_s_a_ the web surfers families u_s_a_ dot org
and rotten
gil murray bar viewers our listeners and overview of what's going on here
well we have hundreds of people here
for activists from all across the country
and we're
uh... talking through what we need to do in the months n
uh...
year ahead
and the key task at this point
unlike last year when
we weren't sure where the affordable care act which survives cream court
challenge road the presidential election yeah now we know the affordable care act
is going to move forward
and in eleven months it's going to be implemented
in eight months
the enrollment period begins so that people who don't have coverage but need
coverage
can start getting in wrong so that's what september october started over one
driver one uh... and the enrollment
what starts out problem
applies starting january one but uh...
it'll take awhile for number of people to get
sure uh...
job one that we're all talking about is how do we make sure
at the tens of millions of people who don't have uh... coverage can afford
are gonna get the help they need because the affordable killer does provide
health but unfortunately
the overwhelming majority of people aren't aware of this
so we've got a undertaking major public education campaign
and so that everybody
who can really benefit from it
actually learns about it and get syndrome that's job one now we got a
number of states is you know that have not yet chosen said expand their
medicaid programs
which is allowed into the affordable care act
and uh... affordable care act
provides very substantial money to the states that choose to do it a hundred
percent moving costs of expanded coverage
uh... for the next three years still not a good enough braced for bobby jindal
heard scott scattering measure it
unappealing as a result of a bit not fit the overwhelming majority of governors
ultimately are going to say yes we
we already have four governors republicans who said yes and
arizona new mexico nevada north dakota uh... it is going to be another major
announcement next week
uh... i think that
as states governors understand
that first of all it's not gonna cost their state money
and it's actually gonna say the state money could remember when somebody's
uninsured
goes to a public hospital and get scared
across the state money that's gonna save this statement and that by the way is a
law that ronald reagan put into place in the eighties means that the dot a_t_r_s
had to take people and before that these three people on it
that's right and
and of course this is going to mean more jobs
uh... it's going to strengthen the economy because there's a huge influx of
dollars that will come to a state
you can you imagine
how does the governor from louisiana
say to
his constituents you're going to be paying federal taxes and those federal
taxes are going to go to provide health coverage for people in california in new
york but you're not gonna get it here in louisiana
i don't think i i wouldn't want to try to sell that proposition yeah buddy
gentles going to have a challenge on his hands and then bricks gotten a lot of
these uh... these are the best
respectfully
isn't that the job of your bomber administration twenty one people of this
rather than independent groups like yours and and and and maybe you should
be doing more like advocacy and or
or is advocacy in informing people the same thing is is as people learn about
it does that get the more excited about it so they're more likely to get
politically active to push back against the
the uh... he attacks on the program or minus senior your mission statement
well first let me say i think you know bombing
administration is uh... fully committed and will be undertaking a vigorous
effort today to inform people secretary sebelius
i think is going to continue to be tireless then uh... going around the
country and informing people
uh... so the administration is going to do the job but this is so big kisses
unprecedented
we've never seen such an expansion of coverage so is really is important
for the public and the private sector to do this work
opt for those of us
who've been working literally for decades to try to expand coverage for
people that don't have it
well we don't want a big victory in
two thousand ten with the affordable care act being passed
mhm but it's only a piece of paper right now
yeah and we now have to make sure
that as the rubber hits the road people learn about it so we will be working
closely with seo bomb in ministration to make sure people learn about it and
actually given wrong
now that they're actually are affair a number of pieces of the affordable it
correct that have already come into law you know you kids can be on the program
until they're twenty and six six
and uh... uh... while actually if if you could
bring us up to date on what has taken place
what's going to take place and at what point in time and under what
circumstances will the state of vermont which has already
uh... passed legislation been signed by the governor they get the working that
task force working on right now for a statewide single-payer health care
system when will they be able to kick that into place montana versus looking
at the same in a humane
noah fathers around
which only ron pollack by the way who's the fun in executive director of
families u_s_a_ is went on this conference here
so their number of things that are ready to have taken effect so that you
mentioned one of them
uh... young adults up to their twenty-six birthday can stay on their
parents policy
they're close to three million people young adults who gain coverage that way
uh... children
can no longer be denied health care coverage
to a pre-existing condition and come january
that protection is going to extend to everybody
well so that's very important so many people who need health care the most
may have diabetes or has more
nazi even
uh... more life threatening
uh... they no longer can be denied insurance
to a pre-existing condition
small businesses
are getting uh... tax credit subsidies
so that it's affordable to continue providing coverage for their workers
uh... seniors
are uh... receiving benefits they have this big gap in coverage
uh... they are now getting help
uh... with that coverage metal continue
there now gagging
freed personal preventive care services uh... now the bigger reforms go into
effect
that enable people to get coverage in the marketplace and get subsidies
and that starts over the next year or two
and and this real quickly when can vermont cake and it's a twenty fourteen
twenty sixteen i think it's twenty sixty
unless they get a waiver from cars
that's going to be a very important experiment yeah it actually is i think
it could be good since catch one of the united states
ron pollack the
