Welcome back to Campus Spotlight. I'm your host Tammy Thompson.
This is where you learn about the events and activities happening on the
Campus of West Kentucky Community and Technical College.
How would you like to travel to El Salvador and help families in need
at the same time? Here's Carolyn Perry tell you just how to do that.
My name is Carolyn Perry; I'm the Associate Professor of Spanish at
West Kentucky Community and Technical College and I'd like to tell you
about our upcoming service-learning trip to El Salvador.
We're working in partnership with Starfish Orphan Ministry out of Paducah,
Kentucky,
to plan this very unique service-learning trip
in El Salvador for Spring Break of 2014.
El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America
and has a very high population of close to six million people.
There are a lot of needs in El Salvador so we are going to be addressing
a lot of those needs. The projects that we have organized are
One, to build a house which is to me a very exciting adventure.
We will be building a home for a family that otherwise would lose their children
to a
national state orphanage. So it wll be a simple home; one that we can construct in
approximately two days.
So it will be very dedicated and focused on building that home
out of two days at the service-learning trip. The other time, we'll be taking the
students, the children out on different outings.
We will take, for example, teenage boys to baseball stadium game. We'll take some
teenage girls to a bakery so they can experience baking
on their own and making something on their own. And we'll be
working with the orphans on almost a daily basis.
Another part of what we do is
work with the group that is called Sus Hijos. That is
a group that will help us organize all these activities.
And what they do on an almost daily basis is feed the homeless.
So at least two of the nights down there we'll be taking food to homeless
people in certain areas of El Salvador
and meeting those needs. The trip is scheduled again for Spring Break 2014.
We'll leave on a Friday, March the 14th and return on a Friday,
March the 21st. And...the trip is open to any student, faculty or staff member that
is interested and has a big heart for helping.
So I really look forward to having a lot of people interested.
It's been very exciting that the students that are going
have already become very involved. The price for the trip is $1,080
dollars.
But much of that is already been covered by fundraisers; we've had a great
enthusiastic group of students and
anyone that comes on now we'll see that part of their way will be paid from
these
fundraisers. If you're interested, sign up by March the first
and just give me a call at 534-3205
or send me an e-mail, carolyns.perry@kctcs.edu
Thank you Carolyn.
That does it for this edition of Campus Spotlight. We'll see you next time.
