to compare fractions I want to create equivalent fractions with the same denominator and then
compare the numerators so between four- fifths and six-sevenths
what I'm going to do is to start by writing four over five
and six over seven and then i need to decide what to multiply each fraction
buy in the numerator and denominator
so that i can compare them
so what I'm going to do is extended my line here
and over here I'm going to multiply by seven in the top and the bottom
and in this one I'm going to multiply by five
I'm still not sure the relationship between these two practice so I'm going to put a
question mark here
if I multiply four times seven I get twenty eight
five times seven I get thirty five
over on the right hand side six times five i get
thirty
seven times five I get thirty five and so i can see if i have
twenty eight out of thirty five that is less than thirty over thirty five so
I use what is called an inequality symbol
and in an inequality symbol the opening goes to the greater number so i see
twenty-eight over thirty five is less than
thirty over thirty five
but my original question had to do with four-fifths and six-sevenths
so let me write this using the equivalent fractions
four-fifths is where we started here is less than
six over seven
so this is my final result
and the information above
is the justification for that result
