I think the thing that I enjoyed most was the opportunities that I got offered as part
of my course, not just the Maths side of things, but all the involvement that I've had with
all sorts of other things, like the representation, being able to represent the students on my
course, and the stuff that I've had to do with the social side of things. It's really
meant that I've not just come out of Heriot-Watt with a Maths degree, but I've come out with
all these other skills that I've developed and it's made me much more well-rounded. My
1st and 2nd year, things didn't go so well and I knew there was the support there and
there was members of academic staff that I could talk to and they would just be like:
“Right, you're not doing so well, but here's what you need to do, and you should really
be trying a bit harder”, and that sort of stuff, and that really sort of helped me through.
I founded the Maths Society when I was in 3rd year purely because Maths students tend
to stick to their groups of 5 and they never venture out of them. So, the Maths Society
was really set up to get all the Maths students together, to get them to socialise as a bigger
group of students and then from that develop a more peer-supported learning environment
where they/you would revise more in groups, which didn't really go on in Maths before
that. I've been elected as the Senior Vice-President at the Student Union, so I take that up for
a year and it's a paid place, which is really nice. So, I'm really looking forward to that.
And that's sort of all my opportunities that I've been offered that I've taken up, and
I've sort of - at least I think I've - put some of enthusiasm in to them, and that's
all sort of culminated in me eventually running for the position and getting elected, so...that's
just...it's strange because it has nothing to do with Maths, really, it's something completely
different. And I think that's the thing that's great about getting a degree from Heriot-Watt:
it allows you to sort of try different tangents then just go off and find what you really
love and just go and do it. And I don't think you get that in many other places.
