I work for the Import Safety CTAC;
the Commercial targeting and analysis Center.
The Import Safety CTAC was stood up recently to address the issues of safety within consumer products.
We're a targeting group, so we have access to computer systems
that allow us to place holds on freight around the country.
Some of these other agencies don't have access to customs import data.
By joining the CTAC, they gain that access.
So, that's a really big plus for those other agencies.
When you have a question about a vehicle being imported,
you have to run it by NHTSA for safety, highway safety issues.
NHTSA is a small agency that's a part of the Department of Transportation.
The value of NHTSA now being attached to the Import safety CTAC
is that they are able to get into the data themselves
and see in a nationwide perspective of what's happening with certain kinds of imports.
There's a lot more leverage for them.
Cool thing about it, to me, it that,
from here at the Import Safety CTAC we can look nationwide,
but if it's a small little port, they don't get to see that big picture,
and we're providing their eyes to the bigger picture.
I spent a lot of years working at one little port
and I like the fact that I can reach out and touch lots of little ports right here, in this kind of job.
So, that's satisfaction enough, right there.
