You were always in a hurry,
"Don't worry, don't worry," you would say,
But I could see fear clumped up in your throat
Like the handful of pills you once swallowed.
You always tasted of liquor, smoke and regret
but I didn't mind,
At least not when your fingers trekked my mountainous spine
In search of the place where my sins were buried.
and too often you'd repeat
that I was dark nights and plentiful valleys.
But, to me,
you were nothing more than the piercing sobs
That emerged from that lonely back alley
where you told me you loved me
And I told you I loved my freedom.
That was the day you spilled whiskey on ice
Until you couldn't remember your name
But somehow still remembered mine.
You got in the car,
"Don't worry, don't worry,"
But the scent of Jack Daniels wrapped around your neck
like the noose I often hung but never had the courage to tighten
You were always in a hurry
"Don't worry, don't worry,"
But you squeezed my hand instead of the breaks.
"Don't worry, don't worry,"
But you pressed down your foot when the warning lights caught your sight,
And the bells in the back were ringing.
"Don't worry, don't worry,"
But I was heated up and screaming.
You were always in a hurry.
You blinked, you turned you looked me in the eye.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry,"
But the train was faster than your car.
