A chess piece, a rook
This rook with the complete interior,
door and windows, spiral staircase and battlement
is not casted or handmade
it was made fully automatic, using a 3D printing procedure, the so called stereolithography
At first it only exists as a digital file.
At the CAD facility of a south German college it is saved as a digital
volume model.
The data is transferred to a data carrier
and this data carrier is brought to
shop foreman Peter Sorg. He prepares the data
for the 3D printing machine.
This is the liquid basic material,
polyepoxide resin that will later harden.
Mr. Sorg re-fills some,
and installs the base, that will bear the rook.
The base is lowered into the resin
and the process begins.
A laser ray is guided point-to-point on the base
to create a hardened layer.
This animation shows us some additional
details.
Where the blue laser ray hits the resin
a chemical process is triggered
that hardens the resin.
The base is lowered 0,1 millimeter after a layer is completed
A coater blade pulls new resin over the layer.
Layer by layer our rook
assembles on the base
as we can see in time lapse.
After two hours it emerges
from resin pool.
It was made from around 600 layers.
The liquid resin drips down.
Now to the post-processing.
Mr. Sorg removes the liner layer
and the rook is cleaned with acetone and dryed afterwards.
By UV curing it gets its final grade.
UV light makes it polymerise completely.
Within 5 hours, the digital model was created, transferred
and put into a real object.
This was a simple example. More complex pars take more time.
But it is possible and stereolitography
is way faster than conventional processes of manufacturing.
Especially when compared to casting.
Sterolithography is an additive process.
