Welcome to week three of Business 160, International Business.
I hope you are enjoying this weekly activities section where I attempt to summarize
all the activities and tasks for you for the week.
I wanted to make note of a slight change this week in our discussion board.
We have changed the rubric for this.
I'm looking for you to post an initial post by Wednesday.
because I'll be looking for peer posts this time
and that will impact your grade.
To see exactly how that is going to work, when you come into the forum, you can now see
an option for grading information.
And when I'm clicking on "View Rubric", you'll see the grading rubric which says that
your basic post, your initial post, can earn up to 8 points
and then I'm looking for you to respond to at least two your peers.
And for that you carn earn the remaining two points for a total possible of ten points
for a discussion board post going forward from here.
One other thing you'll see
in the weekly activities for this week is the detailed Case Analysis Assignment.
I'd like you to
start looking at that this week even though its not due until the end of next week because
you have a choice between one of three cases.
You do not have to write on all of these cases. Just write on one of the three.
I tried to pick a variety of industries as well as a variety of geographic locations from which
you can choose. So, think about which one you'd like to do so that you can begin your research
sooner rather than later.
In terms of course content remember we have our
system over here CourseMate.
You may not realize how to change to the other chapters so I just clicked on
select a chapter. We want to look at chapter 2 now, Understanding Politics, Laws and Economics.
Here you're going to see our learning objectives where we are introducing the concepts
of formal and informal institutions, where we're focusing on formal institutions
this week.
I think this glossary tool is really, really excellent.
If you download the PowerPoints
you'll get to see some great stuff introducing these concepts of formal and informal institutions.
And making sure that you understand that how these are supported are through laws --
that's the formal institutions. And then next week we'll jump into learning about
informal institutions which are really just supported by society.
I did want to point out
an interesting point in legal systems.
When I taught this the course on campus
I took some time to look up what the current legal system structures are
and I included that over here in Blackboard.
so that you could see this map which is a Wikipedia sourced item.
Here's a proper source citation for you.
Now the way Wikipedia broke down the definition here is slightly different
and so I just wanted to explain it.
And also point out something. So where we see Sharia and Fiqh law
that is categorized as
Theocratic law over here in the text book.
But because the only countries which operate under a theocracy
are operating under the Sharia laws. That's why this is showing it this way.
The other thing to visually identify is what? And that is that the United States is somewhat alone
in its practice of Common law. So the legal system that we're all familiar with day in and day out
is not practiced very globally. The most commonly practices sort of law is Civil law.
And you'll get to learn a little bit about what that means in your work this week.
So I hope you enjoy jumping into some of the meat of our subject matter this week. And it
gets even more interesting next week when we talk about culture and religion, things like that.
As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
