Hi! I’m Lachland Clarke on behalf of Expert Village. I would like to invite you to visit
our website at www.teamclarke.org. The drag mat is used a lot of times for going down
hill and sometimes around corners there is a technique of using the drag mat to keep
your sled from sliding at the outside too far due to centrifugal force. The obvious
application for going down hill is to keep the sled at a slow enough speed so that it
doesn’t overtake the dogs and you want the dogs to always have a little bit of pull so
a brake mat is really a good way of just having a finer tuned amount of drag and pull on the
dogs from the sled end of the whole setup. What’s it made out of? Usually they are
made out of old snowmobile tracks and then they have snow machine or snowmobile bill
studs. Usually tapped and drilled into the mat itself and the last couple of years have
been made out of varying types of plastic but they all seem to have a certain amount
of snow machine tread and that is backed up by some titanium or carbide snow machine or
snowmobile tips that are tapped and screwed right into the bottom of the mat.
