Hi, I'm William Cane and I'd like to share some research with you that we found recently
about bands that are playing before a live audience. We had questions about what is the
best and most effective outfit that men could wear if they are in a band, especially the
lead guitarist, or the bass guitarist, or the rhythm guitarist. So we did research and
we polled seventy-five young women; we asked them; we showed them various outfits, and
what we found is so counterintuitive and unusual that most guys would never even think about
it. But it turns out that the most effective shirt that a man should wear is one that has
a ruffled front. It could have a ruffled collar or sleeves or front and it will be effective.
And you may be saying, "Well, how could this be? Why is it that such an unusual style is
effective for a guy playing the guitar today?" And we puzzled over this ourselves until we
realized that if you look at romance novels you will see that the hero often is wearing
one of these old-fashioned shirts, the kind that pirates used to wear. And these are the
shirts that women respond to subconsciously and it's very exciting to them. And most guys
will not wear a shirt like this because first of all they don't have it in their wardrobe,
and secondly they can't find it anywhere. The fact that it's difficult to find is actually
going to be to your advantage. Why is that? Well, think of it. Your competition will not
be able to find this shirt and they will not be likely to be wearing it on stage. Whereas
if you do, you will have an advantage over them. This is the type of research that Manhattan
Makeovers shares with clients. We get a question, we do the research, and then we present it
and we test it. Not only did we ask these women about it but then we sent guys on stage
who were in bands and we polled the responses to them and then we asked them what the response
was in the audience, and it turns out that this style of shirt is definitively the most
effective for a male guitarist today. So I hope you find this helpful and I hope it supercharges
your next on stage performance.
