Hello to everyone!
Today we have a possibility to compare two similar music instruments:
it's American Gibson SG and American Gibson SGJ.
According to a specification both guitars have the pickups
490R and 498T
The deference is that in a standard they are in metal chromium-plated cases
and in SGJ - in black plastic ones.
All hardware look identical,
very beautiful
and...
we can notice the difference is only in that
the knobs look a bit differently.
You will be able to have a good look at that in the photos.
The tuners are the same, it's Gibson Deluxe.
The fingerboards, according to a specification, are the same as well: it is rosewood, but
if we look closely
we can see the wood differs on the surface and in texture and color.
It's complicated to say something but nevertheless,
there is a difference in outward appearance. But we will trust the specification both materials are rosewood.
The shape of the bodies is the same,
the scale length is the same, too,
but there are thiner horns (bungles) in SGJ, both the uppers and the lowers.
As a whole the instruments look great, are solidly made,
it's nicely to hold them in hands and
of course it's gratefully to play them.
These instruments are not new ones, they are already played out and
on either of the two you can see signs of exploitation:
on SGJ the surface between pickups became a bit polished.
It will be seen in the photos as well.
And the pickguard on the SG got slightly scratched.
But those are normal effects, it's live instruments
so I'm sure it will not have effect upon the sound quality.
In the SG the neck is made of mahogany,
and in SGJ it's made of maple.
Let's check how all that stuff tells on sound. Is there any deference and how much is it?
So let's turn to the test. Going to start with clean sound,
then try to play with overdrive, crunch,
and then i'll play with distortion.
In the end we will make some conclusions.
So what we have.
Already during the recording process starting from the crunch
we could hear difference
in the output level of the pickups.
They are placed on the same height
and as you know have the same marking
but there is difference including timbral.
Perhaps it's because of
here the sensors are in metal chromium-plated cases
and here they are in plastic ones.
Cases of course have different properties from each other:
different thickness and other parameters.
There are many other factors like neck's wood difference first of all,
material of the fingerboard, although they have to be equal, according to a specification.
The sound from the both guitars
was recorded in two channels.
Distorted sound you could hear in this video
and source signal, absolutely clear,
it's wav file, you can download.
All links you will be able to find in the description of the video.
So, that's all, our test is finished.
Your thoughts, some suppositions
you can type in comments. We will discuss, it's interesting.
Exellent instruments. Good bye!
